''World War One named Medal Grouping''

The items featured here are a nice original WWI soldier medal grouping in very good condition. The grouping contains a World War One Victory Medal with "France" bar and a Warren County Ohio Service Medal. Both Medals were given to Samuel A. Hamilton, who served with HQ Company, 331st Infantry Regiment of the 83rd Division.


The VICTORY MEDAL is still in his original issue and mailing boxes.

Trumbull County Ohio Service Medal has the veterans name "S. A. HAMILTON" engraved on top bar. The medal also has his original box and is manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag Co. from Newark, New Jersey.

Back of the medal reads:
"PRESENTED BY THE PEOPLE OF TRUMBULL COUNTY IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF PATRIOTIC SERVICE RENDERED DURING THE WORLD WAR 1917-1918"



SAMUEL AUGUSTUS HAMILTON was born on April 1, 1894 in Apollo, Armstrong or Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Samuel A. Hamilton (#1943389) 23 years and 5 months old at that time, entered the service with the National Army on September 21, 1917 in Warren, Ohio, the state of the 83rd Division.

He went overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) from June 3, 1918 till January 26, 1919 where he reached the rank of Private first Class on February 23, 1918 and the rank of Corporal on August 4, 1918. He was assigned to Headquarters Company of the 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division until he was honorably discharged on February 8, 1919.



After World War One,
he married Augusta Bessie Burr (1900-1960, they had one daughter, Viola Mea Hamilton (1926-unknown)
.

United States World War II Draft Registration Card 1942, referred to as the "old man's registration", conducted on 27 April 1942, for men born on or between 28 April, 1877 and 16 February, 1897 (age 45-64).


Samual Hamilton died on June 8, 1974 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.


331st INFANTRY REGIMENT - The 331st Infantry Regiment, served during World War One as part of the U.S. Army 83d Infantry Division. Composed entirely of Clevelanders aged 21-31 who had been drafted into the army, the regiment included companies A, B, C, D, H, and L and a supply company. Basic training of the new recruits was conducted at Camp Sherman, northwest of Chillicothe, OH.
